Opel Factory

Many people once worked on new cars in this former Opel factory in Belgium. When production moved elsewhere, closure followed, along with the dismissal of many employees.

Our visit was short. We had to leave earlier than planned.

When I wrote this account, the complex had already been cleared. I did not know whether the buildings had subsequently been demolished or given a new use. These photographs at least offer a small impression of the factory during our visit.

The images mainly show what can remain of a factory once the production installations have gone: a revolving door, a large bright space and an almost uninterrupted series of windows. It is a different image of industry from cranes and machinery. Here, the emptiness itself says something about the departure of the people and their work. I could not record more than this limited impression during that short visit.
