Château Rouge

This château had been known among urbex photographers for years. The building had a striking red exterior, while its interior was much less complete.

The red façade explains the name Château Rouge. Parts of the interior were later painted red too. I do not know who did that or why.

Parts of the interior were also painted red after the residents left. Who had done it and why remained a mystery to me.

The red façade is instantly recognisable, with a distinctive arrangement of gables and small towers. The impression inside is very different. In the empty room with its damaged fireplace, the finishes stand out most. That contrast between a stately exterior and a deteriorated interior makes a series like this interesting. A façade alone tells you far from everything about a building’s condition.
