Horror Labs

Horror Labs was a former veterinary school. The nickname came from jars of preserved animal specimens left in a dark basement room. A strange sight, but one explained by the building’s former teaching function.

The drive that Monday morning took almost twice as long as expected. The visit was worthwhile: besides the cellar, the building itself had much to offer.

Earlier visitors had already moved objects. The precise arrangement in the cellar could therefore no longer be assumed to be original. The complex was later cleared and renovated. These photographs predate that new use.

The jars in the cellar naturally attracted most attention. They belong to the complex’s former educational role, however, rather than an invented horror story. The other photographs also show the stairs and interior finishes. That combination matters to me: a school is more than its most striking collection. Where specimens had been placed by earlier visitors, the original arrangement also remains uncertain.
