The photographs may suggest otherwise, but Hospital Exodus was already out of use when we visited. It was one of those hospitals where a great deal of equipment and furnishings remained after a move.
We were able to photograph there for a few hours. The relatively complete rooms gave the building a different appearance from a hospital reduced to bare walls. A tidy operating room in a photograph, however, says nothing about whether it can actually be used.
The surgical lights, the table and the connections along the wall are still present. They make part of the hospital look as though work has only briefly stopped. That is precisely what can make the photographs misleading. Equipment left in place cannot tell you whether a room is still in use, whether anything works, or what was to happen to it after the move.
