Saint Joseph Hospital, Kerkrade

Saint Joseph Hospital belongs to a time when a town having its own hospital seemed entirely natural. In Kerkrade, its origins lay in the work of the Missionary Sisters, Servants of the Holy Spirit, from Steyl.

The sisters came to Kerkrade in 1911. In February 1914, the hospital began with twelve sisters and about sixty beds. Those figures give a sense of the scale on which care was organised then. The building later grew with demand and advances in medicine.

A hospital that changed

The religious order remained responsible for its administration until 1980. Independent management followed. Through later partnerships and mergers, the hospital became part of Atrium Medical Centre. Atrium subsequently joined the hospital in Sittard-Geleen to form Zuyderland.

For Kerkrade’s residents, these changes were more than new names on a façade. Departments closing or moving meant that care once available in their own town had to be sought elsewhere. I already mentioned the dissatisfaction about that in my earlier text.

The photographs focus on the building. A hospital is usually viewed through its function: where do you need to go, which department and which door? In a photo series, attention shifts to the spaces themselves. A corridor or stairwell takes on a significance it hardly had in daily use.

That does not turn this into a retrospective about individual patients or their medical histories. Those stories belong to the people who came and worked here. The building mainly shows how an institution grew and changed organisation over time.

This report is a snapshot of the former hospital. For information about present-day care in Kerkrade, consult healthcare providers. These images preserve an earlier phase of a building familiar to many local residents.
