Das alte Papierwerk, Papierfabrik W or simply Paperworks: different names for an abandoned paper mill in Germany. Much of the loose equipment had been removed, but heavy machinery and some of the controls were still in place.
That made the factory special to me. Its function remained recognisable without needing a sign beside every component. Even years after the visit, it remained one of my favourite industrial locations.
I do not reproduce an exact construction or closure year here on the basis of the nickname alone. The building and its installations already provide enough material for the series.
The control panels and large gauges show that a paper mill needed more than a machine from which a roll of paper emerged. Power, steam and controls were all parts of the same whole. One photograph shows a badly deteriorated gauge still standing among the rusty pipework. Its scale is recognisable, but the process itself has stopped. Details like these stayed with me from this factory.
