Mission to Mars

Built by people, later abandoned and already somewhat decayed: that was really all it took to attract my attention.

As far as I could find, Mission to Mars had no long or remarkable history. Its architecture and construction were striking, though. When I saw photographs of it, I wanted to know what it had been.

A brief search revealed that it was simply a former growing greenhouse on the outskirts of a German city. The location was soon found. A drive there resulted in this series.

The hexagonal shapes and lightweight construction make the greenhouse seem almost detached from its original function in some photographs. Up close, the grilles, doors and workbenches reveal what the building was used for. That interplay between an unexpected form and a very ordinary purpose was the subject here. There was no need to invent a grand story about an exceptional use.
