Rusty and Dusty

Rusty and Dusty was a former steel wire factory. When I photographed it, work had been stopped for years, and the second part of the nickname was particularly well chosen.

A thick layer of dust covered some rooms. Anything you leaned against or brushed past left the same grey colour behind. Afterwards, I looked roughly like the factory itself.

The buildings later disappeared. The series was made before that demolition and shows how much can remain recognisable in a hall after a production process stops.

The rails and curved tracks in the floor show that material had to be moved here. The large hall has its own rhythm of columns and machines. In the details, that same grey layer dominates, the one that got onto everything during the visit. The dust was no post-processing effect, although afterwards I would rather it had only been in the photographs.
