Sauna J

When I visited Sauna J in summer 2013, only a limited group of photographers knew the location. That benefited the condition of the complex.

The pool water had come to resemble green pea soup, but the familiar sauna smell still lingered in the building. A bed beside the massage room also gave an idea of how thoroughly you could once relax here.

After closure, the complex deteriorated further. Parts of the roof were missing, and plants began to take over. The sauna later disappeared. These photographs preserve the period between normal use and demolition; an address adds nothing to that story.

The images still clearly distinguish the sauna’s different parts. The cabin’s timber walls remain recognisable, while the stagnant green water outside shows above all how long maintenance had been absent. The contrast between an interior that looks almost usable and the decay around it interests me more than reconstructing how the sauna was once furnished.
