Prison 11

Prison 11 sounded like a prison, but it was a nickname for part of a former barracks complex. The name referred to the number of cells.

The building had been on my list for some time. During the visit, some original frames and pipes had already been removed. The series shows that transition, when the old function had disappeared and no future use was yet apparent inside.

The rooms in the photographs are largely empty. Layers of paint peel away, sometimes revealing a completely different wall colour beneath the top coat. Changes in the building become visible even though little furniture remains. Prison 11 is a nickname; it does not turn every room pictured into a prison cell. That distinction is easily lost when looking at urbex series.
