Deep in the woods stood this abandoned castle. Around the turn of the millennium, a devastating fire had struck it. After that, the elements had free rein.
During my visit, mainly the outer walls and a few load-bearing interior walls were still standing. In places, beams, arches and masonry were barely holding together.
Its structural condition reminded me of Château Noisy. That advanced decay gave the building a distinctive appearance, but also made clear how little remained.
The tall windows and surviving fireplace still show that these were once large, finished rooms. Now daylight enters where a roof and floors used to enclose the space. That also changes what a wider photograph shows: no longer the layout of a room, but the parts of a building that remain standing. There is no need to exaggerate the decay here.
