Le Dentiste

An abandoned dental practice with a beautiful wooden staircase. Someone had once made an energetic start on a renovation, while the old equipment simply stayed where it was.

It does feel strange. Elsewhere, people might still have welcomed usable equipment, while here everything was left to its fate.

By the time we visited, ‘decorators’ had already been at work too. They tried to create an atmosphere for their photographs by moving things around. For me, that took away the very story the room itself still told.

The dentist’s chair and old instruments immediately reveal the room’s purpose. Bottles and packaging stand on the windowsill, while elsewhere the ordinary domestic interior remains visible. That distinction between practice and home is more interesting here than a collection of ‘scary’ medical objects. There was no need to gather those things together for a photograph. Their condition and position at the time of the visit were already enough.
